Author Visits
Jeff Smith
In October 2007, through a partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library and the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System, my school was selected as one of two schools to host a guest visit from author and illustrator Jeff Smith.
Novello Festival Press is the nation's only public library-sponsored literary publisher. An imprint of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, NFP seeks to enhance awareness of the literary arts and expand opportunities for readers and writers from within the community and beyond it.
There was collaboration with the visual art department to have students research the life and work of Jeff Smith and as a culminating project, the students were required to draw characters based on the style of Jeff Smith’s popular Bone series.

T.A. Barron
In October 2013, though a partnership with, Park Road Books, a local book store. Author T.A. Barron came to Northwest School of the Arts to speak with students in grades 6-8. I collaborated with the 6th grade ELA teacher to prepare the students for the visit. Since many students were not familiar with the author, the teacher planned a unit about the lost city of Atlantis to prepare them to discuss his new book Atlantis Rising.
